How to Renew Your U.S. Passport
A practical guide to renewing a U.S. passport by mail or online, including eligibility, forms, fees, timing, and common renewal mistakes.
If your U.S. passport is expiring soon, renewal is usually simpler than applying for the first time. The key is knowing whether you qualify to renew by mail, renew online, or must apply in person.
As of June 21, 2026, routine passport processing is listed by the U.S. Department of State at 4-6 weeks, while expedited service is listed at 2-3 weeks. Mailing time is separate and can add up to 2 weeks each way.
When you can renew by mail
You can generally renew by mail using Form DS-82 if your most recent passport:
- Can be submitted with your renewal application.
- Has never been reported lost or stolen.
- Was issued within the last 15 years.
- Was issued when you were age 16 or older.
- Was valid for 10 years.
- Is in your current name, or you can provide certified legal name-change documentation.
- Is not damaged beyond normal wear and tear.
If you do not meet those requirements, you usually need to apply in person using Form DS-11.
When you can renew online
Online renewal is available only for eligible U.S. citizens requesting routine service. You may qualify if your passport was valid for 10 years, you are age 25 or older, you are not changing your name or other personal information, your passport is expiring within 1 year or expired less than 5 years ago, and you are not traveling for at least 6 weeks from the date you submit the application.
Online renewals cannot be expedited. The State Department also warns travelers to use only the official .gov online renewal site.
What you need for renewal
For a mail renewal, prepare:
- Form DS-82.
- Your most recent passport.
- A compliant passport photo.
- Certified name-change document, if applicable.
- A check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State.
For online renewal, you need your passport, a digital passport photo, payment card, and personal details such as your Social Security number and emergency contact.
Fees and timing
Current adult renewal fees are $130 for a passport book, $30 for a passport card, or $160 for both. Expedited service by mail costs extra. Optional 1-3 day return delivery may also be available for an additional fee.
Build in time for mailing, processing, and delivery. If travel is less than 3 weeks away, review urgent passport appointment options rather than relying on a normal renewal.
