How to Check Visa Requirements Before an International Trip

Visa requirements are one of the easiest travel details to overlook and one of the hardest to fix at the airport. The right answer depends on your citizenship, destination, length of stay, reason for travel, transit airports, and sometimes your travel history.

Start with official sources

For U.S. citizens, begin with the U.S. Department of State's destination information and travel advisories. Destination pages summarize entry, exit, visa, safety, and local law information. They also link to embassy and government resources.

Then confirm directly with the destination's embassy, consulate, or official immigration authority. This is especially important for destinations that use electronic travel authorizations, visas on arrival, vaccination rules, or rapidly changing entry policies.

Check every country on the itinerary

Do not only check the final destination. Review requirements for:

Each country you enter.
Each country where you connect, especially if you change airports or leave the sterile transit area.
Cruise ports and overnight stops.
Countries visited on pre-trip or post-trip extensions.
Any destination where you may need to re-enter after a side trip.

Some countries treat transit differently from entry. Others require a visa even for short connections, depending on your passport.

Review passport validity and blank pages

Many countries require your passport to be valid for several months beyond your trip. Some require one or more blank visa pages. If your passport is close to expiration, damaged, or nearly full, renew before applying for visas or booking nonrefundable travel.

Watch the purpose of travel

Tourism, business meetings, study, remote work, volunteering, journalism, performances, and paid work may have different rules. A visa-free stay for tourism may not authorize business activity or work.

Keep copies and proof

Save confirmation numbers, approval emails, QR codes, printed copies, and screenshots. Bring proof of onward travel, lodging, insurance, and sufficient funds if required.
